Tuesday Tunes-- February 9, 2016
Shaun Cordingley
I'm all over the board this week with the new Tuesday Tunes, featuring a wide variety of genres, and generally just have a good, marshmallow-y time.
You'll get that joke in a few minutes:
The Guys From do not hold the rights to any of these songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music, or re-expose them to things they may have forgotten about.
At the top of each section, will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
Old Guitar - BUNT.
German EDM duo Bunt. are experimenting with a folk mixtape, and I for one could not be happier. This is one of those crossover ideas that always seems to work--Avicii's True featuring 'Hey Brother' and 'Wake Me Up' serving as an excellent, and recent example of what is possible in combining folk and EDM.
'Old Guitar' was everything I was hoping for: eminently danceable, features a great bit of stomp-clap and banjo (that banjo is amazing), and that 'edging on country but still EDM' vocal feel, so I don't feel like I'm listening to country (which I dislike), but I get that folksy, bluegrass feel that I do enjoy, while bouncing along and thinking about my old DJ days.
Love this track, and I hope you do too, so that we might convince Bunt. to make a full-on album of it (that mixtape is good....but...).
Arms of Another - Marsicans
If you're looking for more of an upbeat indie pop, with a little bit of a rock edge to it this week, then I would have to recommend 'Arms of Another' by Leeds, UK based Marsicans. Working together since 2011, Marsicans have been building a small, dedicated fan base in the north of England, touring in-between work and University, as well as coming to my through Live at Leeds (festival).
Their latest single, which released little over two weeks ago, really highlights what these four lads are good at: upbeat, catchy as hell music, that for pop, has a true rock flair, which the first time you hear those pure rock n' roll drums kick in, might even catch you a bit off guard. If you're like me though (which would be, I imagine, why you read Tuesday Tunes), you will also, probably, end up listening to 'Arms of Another' repeatedly because of that fun, rock-y pop sound.
KeEp IT MeLLo (ftr. Omar LinX) - marshmello
Anonymous, marshmallow-headed trap house DJ & producer marshmello is one of those musicians who is literally saying "don't worry about me, just dig on the music", and sure, his amazing marshmallow head is distractingly awesome, at the end of the day, he has produced a great track here, featuring Omar LinX, great lyrics; this is just one of those songs that, if you are a hip hop/trap/house fan, you will groove on.
And if this is your introduction to this kind of Trap, then welcome! Check out the rest of marshmello's work; the man does not disappoint.
She Knows - KI
KI, a fun indie band from San Diego, which takes a really cool and different approach to making an indie rock/alternative sound--across their library, you will probably hear: flutes, pianos, rock drums, bass, mandolin, electric guitar...smashing lyrics...it's really hard to put KI into just one category--at the end of the day 'She Knows' is just a damn good song, and I am looking forward to hearing more from them soon.
Golden Lights - KOTI (Kittens of the Internet)
Wrapping up this week is Auckland's KOTI (Kittens of the Internet--yes, a great name...although it does lead to some awkward search results), an indie alt dream pop (their phrase, which is very accurate), duo who have made perhaps the catchiest song I have heard this year in 'Golden Lights'. Dancable, spotlessly produced, and featuring a great hip-hop beat, 'Golden Lights' is one of those songs that I plan on slotting into my 'working around the house' and 'getting ready to go out' and 'working' and...basically every pop playlist I put together for a while.
KOTI (or the easier, and probably my favorite band name of the year so far, Kittens of the Internet): remember that name, and keep an eye out as we should have an alt dream pop EP or LP coming out soon.
The Massive, 2-month (and almost impossible to blend together) December & January Tuesday Tunes Apple Music Playlist is right here. The transitions are a little crazy, but blending Mongolian Folk Metal and Orchestral Electronica was totally a normal...day...for me...
The November Tuesday Tunes Apple Music Playlist and the October Apple Music Playlist is still available of course as well, in case you have not caught those yet (or just need more theguysfrom.com in your life).
Support what you dig! It's soooo much cheaper than anything else out there. You cannot even buy a can of corn for what one of the songs listed here would cost you....sorry, I'm just hungry.
See you again next week with 5 more Tuesday Tunes!
