Tuesday Tunes--July 12, 2016
Shaun Cordingley
I have had a doozy of a day (internet points for anyone who gets the reference), so I'll be a little lighter on descriptions this week, just because...well I don't have a whole lot of time, but I am not skipping a week on one of these music articles unless I gave y'all fair warning.
Oh, and I've gone pure indie rock this week.
The Guys From do not hold the rights to any of these songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music, or re-expose them to things they may have forgotten about.
At the top of each section, will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
Yeah, I Know - Otherkin
Dublin grunge-pop band returns to lead off this week; Long time readers of Tuesday Tunes should recognize Otherkin from their song I talked about in March. This time, there's an energetic, begging to be yelled back to the band at a club track in "Yeah, I Know". There's a lot to love in this song: it's excellently layered, and feels very insistent--this is a 'grunge pop' song that fights your way into your head and stays there.
Check out the rest of Otherkin's latest EP The New Vice...I mean if you have been following along with Tuesday Tunes, you already know and love the first two tracks...so why not jam on the rest?
Karma Seeker - VANT
90s garage rock lives on in UK based indie rock band VANT--you will get some heavy, early Seattle flavors out of "Karma Seeker". This is the kind of indie rock that I really hope we get more of to add some diversity to the indie rock scene, as VANT, in blending a lot of feelings from that golden era of grunge rock, with a modern indie rock aesthetic is both familiar and refreshing. Personally I think the blending of the electric and acoustic sound, coupled with vocalist Mattie Vant's restrained power that really makes VANT hum.
Check out their EP Karma Seeker when it physically releases August 5, 2016.
Dreams - Francis Moon
Swedish Indie dream-rock artist Francis Moon is up next this week with his track "Dreams", which was the premiere single (that debuted in 2015) for his first album Onwards which released this may. "Dreams", like much of the rest of Moon's album, is a fascinating combination of modern indie rock, and a sort of reverb-heavy, atmospheric dream hazethat just screams to be played when you are sitting by the pool this summer, or on the beach (or in my case, on a rock in a river).
The combination is really quite fun, it's sort of like a song that you have heard on the radio (a Foster the People perhaps), but like you're hearing that song for the first time while dreaming on a hot summer day...
One Foot - Airways
Indie rock band Airways, from Peterborough, UK, have one hell of a 'belt it out with the band' song in "One Foot" which came out...well 4 days ago? This is one of those great indie rock tracks that plays with pace, letting rather sparse verses, get punched into the stratosphere in the chorus, as Airways goes full electric guitar banger (this is a song that I start bobbing along to pretty damn fast).
I've been listening to another Airways track for a couple months now, and I'm glad to be sharing them with you now with their latest.
Are You Satisfied - Reignwolf
Wrapping this week up with some Canadian content, with Saskatchewan born Reignwolf; and this bit of ridiculously good modern blues-rock (think Jack White): "Are You Satisfied". This has all the amazing guitar, all the growl, and all the dirty charm that really great blues-rock needs.
I first heard Reignwolf on Roadies, and pretty much immediately downloaded every single available (and they're all good), and have been listening to at least one of them every day.
Seriously, if you are into blues rock, or looking for a strong, guitar heavy, classic hard rock sound, it's time to listen to Reignwolf. Their debut album is coming soon!
Here's the Apple Music Playlist for June 2016! I have done my best to mix it all together like I'm spinning a set for you, but as that is hard to do without being able to fade, mix, or talk through the transitions, you will have to forgive a few hard edges...and this was a (surprisingly) tough month...
Remember, if you want me to put these playlists on other services (like Spotify), let me know on Twitter (I've linked it below).
If you're looking for more Tuesday Tunes, are late to the party, or just want more theguysfrom.com in your day, here are the playlists for:
December 2015 & January 2016 (because I felt crazy)
Support what you dig! It's soooo much cheaper than anything else out there. You cannot even buy a deep fried anything for what one of the songs listed here would cost you...it's Calgary Stampede season...so I'm...in the spirit...
We will see you again next week with 5 more Tuesday Tunes!
