Tuesday Tunes--July 19, 2016
Shaun Cordingley
I do not know where y'all live, but here it has been rainy as hell for over a week. Now, with the sun finally getting out again, and getting back into that summer feeling, I have trended this list over into a real 'summer vibe' sort of feel (which means a lot more electronic than it has been in a while...)
The Guys From do not hold the rights to any of these songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music, or re-expose them to things they may have forgotten about.
At the top of each section, will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
Ankara - Fakear
French DJ and electronic music artist Fakear's gloriously chill track "Ankara" starts us off this week. I would hesitate to call this downtempo (it's not, it's much too fast), but "Ankara" has everything a great, summer "hang out on the beach" track needs: hazy synth, a beat that keeps you moving (but is not insistent), and just a perfect-to-relax-to vibe overall. I'm particularly fond of the rhythm section, transitioning a real organic feeling into the track particularly through the end.
Fakear is just another example of how a lot of the most interesting electronic work is coming out of France...check out his album Animal, which came out over just last month (I'm also quite fond of "Sheer-Khan")!
"Tell You" is a bright, sunshine filled song which balances the excellent vocal styling of Hunnah with a staggered beat emphasized with a combination of synth and piano that turns into one hell of a summer track.
There's really not a lot more to say about this--it's just a song you need for walking down the street this summer (if you want to feel good).
Pusher's EP New Laces comes out August 26th.
Burn Down - 4th Dimension
Belgian Electro-Folk group 4th Dimension (not to be confused with either the Heavy Metal Band, or the South Florida Reggae group of the same name) have an acoustic guitar laden electronic track in "Burn Down" that fits perfectly in with the theme of the first few songs on Tuesday Tunes this week. This is totally a summer evening hangout song, if I have ever heard one: the mellow (folk-like) vocals, steady rhythm, punctuated by those aforementioned guitars all work together spectacularly well.
How Many Times - Rod Ladgrove
Figured I should put one, super chill acoustic song in this week as well, as summer is not all about electronic...and Australian singer/songwriter, producer Rod Ladgrove's "How Many Times" is exactly that: super chill, acoustic guitar and clap song that just worms it's way into your head, and before you know it, you've listened to it on repeat like seven times.
"How Many Times" is super simple, a little dreamy, and 100% summer ready...this is song is almost a vacation in itself.
Hold On - SKIES
Kent, UK indie Rock duo SKIES are definitely a band to watch in the future; this track here "Hold On" is an excellent example of why. Taking bits and pieces from a bunch of different genres, they have blended it into a vibrant alt-sound that would not feel out of place in pretty much any situation you might be building a playlist for. You will probably be amazed that this is just two people--the layers in "Hold On" are stupidly impressive for just two people.
This is just a great single, through and through.
Here's the Apple Music Playlist for June 2016! I have done my best to mix it all together like I'm spinning a set for you, but as that is hard to do without being able to fade, mix, or talk through the transitions, you will have to forgive a few hard edges...and this was a (surprisingly) tough month...
Remember, if you want me to put these playlists on other services (like Spotify), let me know on Twitter (I've linked it below).
If you're looking for more Tuesday Tunes, are late to the party, or just want more theguysfrom.com in your day, here are the playlists for:
December 2015 & January 2016 (because I felt crazy)
Support what you dig! It's soooo much cheaper than anything else out there. You cannot even buy ice for what one of the songs listed here would cost you...it's hot again...and I want Ice...
We will see you again next week with 5 more Tuesday Tunes!
