DSD August 9, 2017: "Salt" - Jordan Mackampa
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.
Salt - Jordan Mackampa
Singer-Songwriter Jordan Mackampa is an artist I just stumbled across, and then found myself listening to both his latest EP Tales from the Broken and his earlier release Physics straight through, as I just sat and appreciated them from top to bottom. While I thought for a little while about which song off of Tales I wanted to share with you, I finally settled on the spare, yet still beautiful "Salt".
Check out the track below:
I think Singer/Storyteller might be more appropriate for Mackampa's work, as every song features a beautifully told (sung), poetic tale. The reason I chose "Salt" as opposed to some of his other (indeed, also excellent) songs, is that I really appreciate the pulled back, subdued, yet still intricate musical backing for Mackampa's vocals. I like how this song, even when it does add a choral harmony, never feels anything beyond intimate. "Salt" is balanced to perfection; a song that it actually feels good to listen to.
As you can probably tell, I'm going to suggest (if you enjoy "Salt") that you grab Tales from the Broken or Physics, as all of Jordan Mackampa's work is worth a listen, with each song telling you a story, with a different feeling, tone, and tempo; a particular favourite of mine off of Tales is "Battlecry" which is much more urgent and powerful, yet does not lose that emotional core that makes his tracks like "Salt" sing.
Here's the July 2017 DSD Playlist! We're missing a few tracks this month, which is sad for the Apple Music folks, but you've still got a really solid list this month (if I do say so myself, which I do...*cough*)
We are also now on Spotify! Here is the link to the July '17 Spotify List (which features 1 more track than the Apple Music list).
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or serach for TGF on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!
