DSD September 1, 2017: "Hydroplane" - Simple Man

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.

Hydroplane - Simple Man

Starting off our September Daily Song Drop feature is a really cool track from the jazz/hiphop/alt-rock blending group Simple Man and their track "Hydroplane" (off of their self-titled debut EP).

Check out the official video for "Hydroplane" below:

At first, I was going to skip this song as I had mistakenly read the band name as the song title, thus thought it was a Skynyrd cover, but I am very glad I didn't. "Hydroplane" is many things all melted down into a hypercool, poetic song; Simple Man have taken elements of alt-rock to backup a chic, lounge-y, "beat" hip-hop song that somehow also features a chill horn section.
It's a lot to take in, but Simple Man have made it all work thanks to Yaakov Kafka's lyrics and vocals tying everything together into one neat package.

I get into arguments sometimes with people around hip hop, but it is songs like "Hydroplane" that really emphasize the poetry possible within the genre, and frankly it's one of those songs that gets better the deeper you dig into it (especially after you get past the blindsiding, but not out of place, indie rock interlude in the middle).

If you dig "Hydroplane", be sure to check out Simple Man, it's a very intriguing debut EP, and I look forward to hearing more of what these guys put forward in future.

Actually managed to get the August 2017 DSD Playlist together on time (short turnaround with the first being a Friday)! This month we are only missing one (1) track, from AL-X the Great, as it is not available...anywhere other than where I put it in here, but it is tradition that we are missing something every month.

ICYMI (somehow) here are the July 2017 DSD PlaylistJune 2017 DSD Playlist, May 2017 DSD Playlist DSD Playlist - Apr 17DSD Playlist - Mar 17 , and there's also one kicking around for DSD Playlist - Feb 17 too!

We are also now on Spotify! Here is the link to the August '17 Spotify List OR, here's the whole playlist for the month right here:

Not to mention the fact that we totally also have a June '17 Spotify List & a July '17 Spotify List

If you're looking for me to add these lists somewhere beyond Apple Music and Spotify (or you want some of the old lists on Spotify), you're going to have to convince me (hard) by chatting with me here, or on Twitter

If you're looking for more great music, are late to the party, or just want more theguysfrom.com in your day, here are the Apple Music playlists for:

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
