Throwback Tracks -- February 15, 2018
David R. Smith
Holy smokes am I tired. Do you ever have those days where things just don't tend to stop? I hit campus at 9:30 this morning and basically didn't let up until now: 7:50pm. It's been a long day. I just finished the dishes and now I finally have been able to sit down and, well, write this. I'm not complaining. I just feel like it's going to be a quick process again this week because, well, life happens. I'll give more than just the songs this week, but don't expect essays...
The Guys From do not hold the rights to any of these songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new (*cough*) and different retro music, or re-expose them to things they may have forgotten about.
At the top of each section, will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website (if possible...which is totally hit and miss with oldies), so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
Peace Train - Cat Stevens
I grew up listening to Cat Stevens. Now obviously I don't remember when his albums actually came out, that happened before I was born. But there was something about Cat Stevens that was really appealing to me when I was a kid. And truth be told, even as a 34 year old, I still find his music appealing!
I've recently rediscovered him on vinyl.
The weird thing is that in all the years I've listened to him, I didn't know that this was the title of this song. All I knew is I loved it. I think it was the hey-yas that was kind of a cool chant when I was a kid. And, listening to this song today, it still gets to me.
Well done, Yusuf!
Rescue Me - Fontella Bass
Rescue Me. The title of one of my favourite shows and also a very good song. This is one of those songs that, I'm pretty sure, everybody knows. I'm relatively certain it's been used in commercials, TV shows and movies. Hell; it might even be used in video games. Who knows?? What do I know? This song is very catchy and one of those ones that just makes me happy.
The Guitar Man - Bread
Admittedly, I don't know a lot about this band. What I do know is that Homer Simpson loves them. (He asks the record store clerk where to find the newest albums by Bread. It's in the Homerpalooza episode. Check it out.)
But this song came suggested by YouTube when I was listening to Cat Stevens. And you know what? It's delightful! It seems as though I'm in a bit of a "soft rock" mood today and this one fit right in. So I'm glad that it came up, and now I'm glad that my life has more bread in it.
Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper
It's possible this is the most 80s video of all time. It's so bad it's good.
The song, on the other hand, is nothing but good. I feel like there was a time (after time; heh) that Cyndi Lauper got kind of a bad rap because she was so 80s and so poppy. But, guys. She won a Tony! How can one give her a hard time if she's a Tony winner??
Also, this song is terrific. How can one not get all the feels when they hear this song?
Fly At Night - Chilliwack
What a great Canadian band we have here! Named after the town in British Columbia, it's remarkable how many hits they actually have. I got their greatest hits a number of years ago and let me tell you; beginning to end, it's rock solid.
This might be one of their most famous songs. So if you don't know this song, there's a good chance you might not like the rest of their stuff. But listen to this song, check out the great guitar opening and then know that the rest of Chilliwack is just as good!
Okay you guys. It's been a busy week. I don't have a lot of gas left, but I told you last week that I would add more description to each of the songs. And I did. Hopefully next week there's even more. It's reading break so chances are good I'll have a bit more time to actually get more written (and I'll have more sleep so, theoretically, more energy!)
As per usual, if you want to check out all the music and all the playlists, I say go for it. I am in full support of this. There are some pretty terrific playlists here; some great mixes! Definitely worth checking out. And they can all be found rigggghhhhhhhtttttttt NOW!
