DSD February 20, 2018: "Doll" - Brett
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music!
Doll - Brett
Today for the Daily Song Drop we have a cool modern indie dream pop track with a heavy new wave influence from Washington DC's Brett called "Doll", which you can check out below:
I feel like "Doll" is a great example of a dream pop band who is willing to take a look back at where their sound comes from (in this case, it feels like some soft, euro, late new wave), while making sure that they are giving it a fresh twist. This track has just the right balance between the lush, synth-y awesomeness of a full-blooded new wave track to feel warm and familiar, but kicks in a clever use of percussion, and changes in the dynamic of the instrumentation to give the dreamy vocals everything they need to pop. "Doll" is a dream pop song that you can listen to over and over and pick out little flourishes, and subtleties every time that keeps the song feeling fresh and exciting.
If this is your first introduction to Brett, be sure to check out their 2017 EP Mustangs or their earlier release Die Young; you really cannot go wrong if you are looking for more of their cool blend of dream pop, indie rock, and new wave, with a personal favourite of mine being the very danceable "Die Young".
Here is the January 2018 Apple Music Playlist, and the January 2018 Spotify Playlist for the Daily Song Drop. It seems like we are starting off the month with the traditional "one song is missing" (that being "Board It Up" by Nekokat), but all in all it's a pretty fun list to start the year off!
Plus it was not the usual soul-murdering December/January blended list that always drove me nuts every year with its' "two months" of songs to try and fit together.
Who does that?
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!
