DSD March 1, 2018: "Matt's Dad" - Honeypot
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music!
Matt's Dad - Honeypot
It has been a while since I've had a chance to talk about a debut single, but San Diego based six-piece indie "quirk pop" band Honeypot's first release, "Matt's Dad", is pretty much exactly what I think we all need today.
Check out the track below:
If you do not end up with a (potentially weird) smile on your face after listening to "Matt's Dad", I'm not sure why you read the Daily Song Drop. This is one of those pop songs that I always love stumbling across, because it strikes the perfect balance between being sweet (without trending into saccharine), and kicking in just the right balance of indie rock, to balance out the pop-perfect vocals. This is a song with a lot of moving parts, but from a band who sound like they enjoy the hell out of what they are creating.
As a debut single, it would have been hard for Honeypot to make something better--this is taking a lot of the most fun parts of pop music, adding some rock elements, and a kick-ass vocalist and creating something that not only feels good to listen to, but leaves me (and hopefully you) wanting more (or just to hit repeat).
As this is their debut single, there are no other Honeypot songs that I can recommend, but I think it's a fair assumption to think that I will be keeping an eye (or ear...ear) on what they release in the future.
Here is the January 2018 Apple Music Playlist, and the January 2018 Spotify Playlist for the Daily Song Drop. It seems like we are starting off the month with the traditional "one song is missing" (that being "Board It Up" by Nekokat), but all in all it's a pretty fun list to start the year off!
Plus it was not the usual soul-murdering December/January blended list that always drove me nuts every year with its' "two months" of songs to try and fit together.
Who does that?
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop...and....in theory, the February playlists!
