DSD March 7, 2018: "Dungeons" - Malik
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music!
Dungeons - Malik
I think one of my favourite things that happens when I'm putting the Daily Song Drops together is when an artist I have previously talked about shares another artist's track, which is exactly the way I stumbled across "Dungeons" by London-based hip hop/R&B artist Malik.
So a shoutout to Lady Donli.
And check out "Dungeons" below:
Typically my taste in hip hop trends toward chop (i like a quick rhyme), but lately I have been finding myself drawn to mellow, soul/R&B infused tracks like "Dungeons". This track has a great beat that is punctuated by flourishes of piano which works in perfect tandem to create a backdrop for Malik's laid-back vocals. This combination creates a song that feels like I should be driving through a rainy city, late at night after a tough day, and that I am using "Dungeons" to wind down (and honestly, I'm probably going to do just that in the future). I also have to say that I love the ethereal vocal sample that pops in at the end--not only does it provide a bit of a breakup for the vocals, but it also elevates "Dungeons" into being one of those songs that just needs to be heard one more time.
And maybe one more after that.
If you are looking for more Malik, be sure to check out his latest release FOMO, which features a lot of cool, chill hip hop with strong R&B elements that any fan of either genre should be giving a listen to.
The February 2018 DSD Apple Music List and February 2018 DSD Spotify List are available! These ones where admittedly tricky as it is a short month (meaning there are fewer songs for me to build the set with), and we are also missing a couple from the lists: "Coward's Castle" by Monti and "highr" by buuzey. However, I have to say that I do enjoy the playlist this month, and I hope you will check it out (at the links above), and share it with your friends!
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!
