Tuesday Tunes--March 29, 2016
Shaun Cordingley
An eclectic and worldly mix again this week for Tuesday Tunes, with music ranging from indie rock, to electro pop, and even a country song.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Seriously though, there's a lot of great indie music for you to check out this week.
The Guys From do not hold the rights to any of these songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music, or re-expose them to things they may have forgotten about.
At the top of each section, will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
Time - Betsy
First up this week is U.K. based Betsy, whose debut EP Fair dropped on the 18th, and I have to say her unique, and powerful voice is really quite refreshing when it comes to indie pop. 'Time' has a real dance-y background to it, and I would not be surprised if you got a bit of a Cher vibe when you first get started, but you will also get flashes of a lot of the other old school power divas.
End of the day, it's a damn good track, and I hope you do give Fair a look, it's a strong debut.
Champion - Deputies
Deputies, a four piece indie rock group hailing from Paris have really hit a classic indie rock track in 'Champion'. This is indie pop rock at it's absolute best: energetic, fun, catchy, and just a damn good track (featuring a simple, but somehow amazingly awesome video) which features just how talented of indie rock band they are. It's what you expect from a rock band: guitar, drum, bass, vocals, but the sheer joy that comes across in their music is infectious, and something that I believe would be an absolute blast to see live.
They have two EPs available, on top of 'Champion' (being their latest single): Honeymoon from 2014, and First Date from 2012, so if this track is your vibe, you have a bit of a back catalog to check out before what will be their third EP.
Alright Goodnight - The Heirs
Electro-pop group The Heirs, fronted by the brother/sister tandem of Brandon and Savannah Hudson (both on vocals) deserve to be on the verge of being huge. 'Alright Goodnight' is elementally danceable, with a hook that will get stuck in your head for days--this is what great electro-pop sounds like: flawlessly produced, great work by the band (Brennan Benko on drums, Alex Flagstad on guitar, and Eian McNeely on bass and keyboard.
I will not make a joke based on their band name about being 'next in line', but their debut EP Ecliptic is one that fans of the genre (or say, Foster the People, Passion Pit etc.) really do need to hear.
Here's an absolutely beautiful work, with Norwegian DJ and Producer Kygo's piano, and Canadian singer Marie.Bel (Marie Bélisle) composing and performing the vocals. There's just something about this song that is a little slice of perfect--Kygo's piano is glorious, and Marie.Bel's vocals suit them so flawlessly that you kind of just want to sit at that rooftop lounge, sipping something cool a little bit longer.
I Was Born - Otherkin
Irish Indie Grunge Pop group Otherkin wrap up this week's Tuesday Tunes with their dramatically fun track 'I Was Born'. Grunge Pop (what they call themselves) is a energetic, fun and dirty rock, which draws on classic Clash-style vibes and swings in into a lush, modern vibe. There's a lot to like here, and if you're interested, their first EP, The 201 EP was released last year (featuring a very 90s 'Ay Ay') and the band is hinting at a second EP coming some time this spring.
The February Tuesday Tunes Apple Music Playlist, with all the songs put together the way we all like it--it's a good list this month, and it was fairly easy to put together into a set...the lack of folk metal helped, but there is still the odd jump that I would talk you through if I was actually spinning this, but cannot...
The Massive, 2-month (and almost impossible to blend together) December & January Tuesday Tunes Apple Music Playlist is right here. The November Tuesday Tunes Apple Music Playlist and the October Apple Music Playlist is still available of course as well, in case you have not caught those yet (or just need more theguysfrom.com in your life).
Support what you dig! It's soooo much cheaper than anything else out there. You cannot even buy ice for what one of the songs listed here would cost you...Do you know how many guys died bringing that ice (and that one bag with the bear in in it? Ah bobo)...
See you again next week with 5 more Tuesday Tunes AND the March 2016 Apple Music Playlist!
