DSD October 23, 2017: "Stuck in Standby" - The Glass Child
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.
Stuck in Standby - The Glass Child
Charlotte Eriksson AKA The Glass Child is an artist whose music I have been enjoying for quite a while now, and I was actually surprised to see that I had not shared anything of hers with you yet (I even searched the website, as I was sure I had...)...so, my bad.
The Glass Child is an artist whose story you really need to read in her own words, as there is literally no way I can do it justice in this little preamble (and, as she is also an author, I would not presume to try and summarize--you just need to click on her website (that I have linked above) and see it for yourself.
What I can do, however, is share with you, and talk a bit about "Stuck in Standby" which you can hear below:
"Stuck in Standby' leans a bit more toward indie pop than a lot of The Glass Child's songs, which are typically a bit closer to folk (though you will catch some modern, indie folk elements here as well), but what I think really stands out is not only how warm and expressive a voice Eriksson has, but that in every song, she tells a story that makes you feel something. "Stuck in Standby" feels personal, but so relatable thanks to how grounded the song is, which has a lot to do with how the track is framed in a comforting blend of 90s and modern, feeling like that perfect song you heard growing up, while still sounding like it's playing in your favourite coffee shop today. "Stuck in Standby" expresses feelings that all of us have had at one time or another about...well feeling stuck in standby (it's a super-apt title), but never lapses into melancholy; it keeps moving, and by the end, every time, I feel pretty okay.
Honestly, if this is your first introduction to The Glass Child, I cannot even really begin to try and tell you where to start, but I think that if you grab pretty much anything she has released, you are going to enjoy it.
The September 2017 Apple Music Playlist and September 2017 Spotify Playlist are ready! As is tradition, the lists are missing a track ("To Do" (Be Yourself) by LEMZI), but I suppose that's just something that you're going to be used to be now considering the way this always seems to go.
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or serach for TGF on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!
