DSD October 5, 2017: "Oblique feat. Trevour Amunga & Pat" - Art_ILL
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.
Oblique feat. Trevour Amunga & Pat - Art_ILL
I totally appreciate when artists play within genres to create something unique--Art_ILL has created something that he calls "Noir Rap", and that is a prefect way to describe "Oblique feat. Trevour Amunga & Pat".
Check out the track below (and heads up, the lyrics are a bit NSFW):
The atmosphere on "Oblique" is addictive as hell: it feels dark and moody like noir, thanks both to the beat/piano balance, but Art_ILL's flow, on both his verse and the chorus is so reserved (buttoned up, even) that it gives off such a chill, late-night city vibe. What's incredible is that "Oblique" is even constructed in something like an act structure: the first verse (Art_ILL) sets the tenor and atmosphere, Trevour Amunga adds a smooth, cool, late-night sheen to it, and then Pat comes in the third act with a burst of energy juxtaposed off of the still steady beat, giving "Oblique" a climax, and the quick-fire resolution leaves me hitting repeat again and again.
There's a lot in "Oblique" to dig; it's really one of those songs that you need to hear multiple times to really appreciate the nuance of it all.
I also have a feeling that this track may not appear on the month-end playlists (just because I have yet to be able to find any Art_ILL on AM or Spotify), so this may also be a case of enjoying the hell out of it here, and checking these guys out on SoundCloud.
The September 2017 Apple Music Playlist and September 2017 Spotify Playlist are ready! As is tradition, the lists are missing a track ("To Do" (Be Yourself) by LEMZI), but I suppose that's just something that you're going to be used to be now considering the way this always seems to go.
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or serach for TGF on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.
Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig
