DSD March 16, 2017: "Galapagos" - King Willow
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.
Galapagos - King Willow
Indie folk/pop is a crowded genre, so it takes something special to stand out from the rest, and "Galapagos" by California-based King Willow has just that. Sisters Amanda and Julianna Salguero form the heart of a group that has just the right amount of a retro, lounge-y tinge in "Galapagos", where Julianna's vocals just melt across an organic, and light, live-feeling layer of Amanda's guitar, and the perfectly unobtrussive drums.
Check out the official video below:
I love the bittersweet tone of the song; while lyrically it is an exploration of a relationship gone sour, musically (and vocally, especially when those wonderful harmonies kick in) there's just such a sweetness to it that, in the juxtaposition, makes a really intricately fun piece of indie folk pop. I mean, I think any track with a retro-y feel, combined with a peppering of xylophone just has to be fun.
Next week (the 23rd) King Willow will be releasing their self-titled EP, and I'm looking forward to checking out more of the sisters' musical range...because while I love "Galapagos", and wish I had "Wishlist" for my Christmas season...I'd like more King Willow in my life (especially as I am nowhere near California, so seeing them live (which I imagine would be similar to a musical hug) is out of the question).
Shoutout to Amanda as well for reaching out to me--there's so much great music out there, it's impossible for me to find it all (and having "Galapagos" pop across my radar randomly was a definitely a good surprise).
Well, I tried my best (...like I actually have control over anything when it comes to Apple Music), and even though we are missing a couple of tracks, the DSD Playlist - Feb 17 is out now, and it's pretty damn great.
Hope you enjoy it too!
Remember, if you want me to expand where I put these playlists beyond Apple Music, you just need to let me know on Twitter, and I'll see what I can do.
