Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.
I Thought I Knew You - Kyra De'Nae ft. JGivens
Californian hip-hop soul artist Kyra De'Nae released her debut album JUSTDENAE late last year, and honestly, I think there is no way I could describe it better than she has:
Kyra De'Nae is a 22-year-old Hip Hop Soul artist from Riverside, CA. Through her music, she tells her story of being a young woman who dealt with thoughts of suicide, depression, alcoholism, abortion and sex addiction but ultimately found restoration through her faith in God. Kyra's goal is to make people soul conscious. She hopes that her transparency about her past struggles and current breakthroughs will initiate dialogue on uncomfortable topics that have been avoided in the urban community for far too long.
"I Thought I Knew You" is a great single from JUSTDENAE, demonstrating the beautiful balance De'Nae strikes between hip hop and a more traditional soul song, featuring an old school hip hop verse from JGivens.
GIve it a listen below:
I absolutely love De'Nae's voice, and that traditional soul feeling that permeates through the entire track, even when "I Thought I Knew You" transitions more into hip hop; it's quiet, and simple musically, and that feels just right for this track. This is a down-to-earth, great soul song, complete with flashes of hip hop, a genre-cross that, frankly I would like to hear more of.
If you're looking for more, you should check out the rest of JUSTDENAE; it's a very good debut album for a young artist, and I am hopeful that we will get to hear a lot more from her in the future.
Oh so close to a complete list for the DSD Playlist - Mar 17 , but that's alright...there is over 80 minutes of indie awesomeness available for you right now....not to mention...in case you somehow missed it, here is last months DSD Playlist - Feb 17
Plus, if you're interested, there is also an Apple Music Playlist for the Top 20 Songs of 2016, where I put together my favourite tracks from last year.
Remember, if you want me to expand where I put these playlists beyond Apple Music, you just need to let me know on Twitter, and I'll see what I can do.
