DSD June 29, 2017: "Matter" - Shallows
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.
Matter - Shallows
Los Angeles based indie pop duo Shallows tend to create genre-bending electro-pop tracks, and "Matter" is exactly that, and very ready for summer.
Check the song out below:
I love the fact that "Matter" feels timeless in the sense that Shallows have taken a few different genres, and even eras of pop/rock and mixed them together into one fun place. You're immediately hit by a modern, electro-pop vibe, but then get waves of 1990s pop music/EDM of today by the first verse, and eventually we're swept into an 1980s arena rock style guitar solo that, while it doesn't sound (as in, if you were just reading this rather than hearing it) like it should work, but oh does it ever work.
I really dig "Matter", and the fact that you can just hear how much these two musicians like working together in the song makes it all the better.
If you are bigger into the EDM scene, you may actually recognize the song as being part of a fairly popular remix by BLU J , which is awesome in it's own right, but the original is where my heart is.
Here's the May 2017 DSD Playlist! We're only missing one track this month (and I'll hopefully be able to add it in later)! It's wonderful, as always, but that should be assumed when I'm making playlists of nothing but songs I enjoy...
Come on back tomorrow for our next Song of the Day, and the June 2017 DSD playlist (with perhaps a surprise)

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.
Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
