DSD July 17, 2017: "Myb" - Red
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.
Myb - Red
We first talked about Rashad E. Davis AKA Red back at the start of May with "IDEK", and just ten days ago, he dropped his comeback album Better Late Than Never and it is all the kick back hip hop you could want. It wasn't easy to pick just one track to talk about, so I figured I'd defer to my usual vibe here (aka there's piano) and went with "Myb".
Check out the song below (and heads up, the lyrics are NSFW)
"Myb" has a great rhythm, and the use of slightly different instruments in background really help this track pop, but honestly, it's about Davis' flow again. This is a track where he plays with the rhythm of his lyrics, while never pushing beyond/clashing with the bassline--"Myb" has an energy just bubbling behind it that gives the track a pulse that's addictive: outside of "IDEK", I am positive I have listened to "Myb" the most thanks to those uptempo hints.
I'd really like to hear Red try a full-bore uptempo track someday, just to see what that would be like, as "Myb" makes it feel like there's chop just simmering beneath the surface.
The heart of Better Late Than Never is really my favourite, running through"Myb", "Through The Glass feat. Panch" and "IDEK" together; the rest of the album is super well polished, and has just the right, chill, "don't give a fuck" attitude in it that it is already one of my go-to, cruising-tempo hip hop albums (which is exactly what I'm looking for in the 30+ degree heat).
If you've liked any of the tracks by Red I've talked about so far, check out the rest of the album. If Better Late Than Never doesn't get in your high rotation for summer...I'm not sure I can help you find music anymore...
Here's the June 2017 DSD Playlist! We're only missing one track this month (as is tradition)! This months list was actually one of the harder ones for me to put together into something that feels (at least sort of) cohesive...I'm not sure why, but I am happy with the way it turned out in the end!
I've also heard you, and here it is: theguysfrom playlists are now available on Spotify! You can find us by looking for theguysfrom on Spotify, click on this link for the June '17 Spotify List...I will also embed the last months' playlist on every Friday DSD.
Come on back tomorrow for our next Song of the Day!
