DSD September 11, 2017: "Girlhood" - The Preatures
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.
Girlhood - The Preatures
The Preatures are an alt-rock four-piece from Sydney, Australia who are frankly a little bit more well known than most of the artists I talk about on the Daily Song Drop, but having spent some good time with their latest album, Girlhood , I came to realize that I really want more people to get turned onto them (if only so I have some people to talk with...).
Check out the video for the title (and first) track off of the album, "Girlhood" below:
I really like how "Girlhood" takes an early 90s bit of snarl, and updates it, putting a modern, fun spin on a classic, alt-rock style track. Isabella Manfredi has a perfect voice for this sort of throwback-hybrid sound--I think she could've fronted a lot of bands from the 1980s and 1990s with her voice, but I appreciate that The Preatures exist today, because, let's be honest, there are not a lot of great sounding bands like this anymore, who do have that raw energy one cannot define until you hear it. "Girlhood" is fun, a bit grimy, and it's a great example of a track from a band that I would bet would be an absolute blast to see live.
As I mentioned above, I have been really digging on Girlhood as a whole, and (as per usual) if you enjoy "Girlhood" you really should check it out; top to bottom this is one of the better albums I have heard all year. Another one of my favourites is the softer, but still awesome (and luckily, also has a video) "Yanada".
Frankly though, I don't think you can go wrong with anything off of Girlhood.
The August 2017 DSD Playlist is here! This month we are only missing one (1) track, from AL-X the Great, as it is not available...anywhere other than where I put it in here, but it is tradition that we are missing something every month. Also, here is the link to the August '17 Spotify List because....we are on Spotify!
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or serach for TGF on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!
