DSD September 21, 2017: "Tokyo" - Luna Shadows
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.
Tokyo - Luna Shadows
Los Angeles based multi-instrumentalist and singer/writer/producer Luna Shadows has been releasing wonderful (yet slightly sad) pop music for a while now, and her latest single "Tokyo" is just excellent.
Give the track a listen below:
"Tokyo" is a sort of sweet/melancholy style of pop which reminds me of Lana Del Rey with an indie electronic feel swirled into it, with synths giving the track its' dreamy sadness. The fact that Luna Shadows has a hand in every part of the songs she creates, also gives them more lyrical weight, and you can really get a connection to "Tokyo", if you let yourself, that is rare in modern indie pop.
In an interview at www.onestowatch.com Luna Shadows described the inspiration for "Tokyo":
When we hope for things, we imagine the happiness we might feel if we receive them. In reality, however, even the most blissful changes are often accompanied by a degree of melancholy. In art, especially music, we regularly see a definitive before and after–a seed & a flower, a caterpillar & a butterfly– but rarely is the actual moment of change depicted. ‘Tokyo’ is intended to be like a musical time lapse or the sonic equivalent of a developing photo, detailing a precise moment where something unfolded in front of me.
Frankly, I felt it much more interesting for you to get a peek into where the artist was coming from, rather than me blathering on about how wonderful "Tokyo" is, but...well I have to get a little bit in: it's a really great track, and I hope you keep an eye on what Luna Shadows is up to, because with every release, she seems to get better and better..
Though I do not want to take anything away from her earlier releases: if you are looking to get more Luna Shadows into your day, I particularly recommend "Cherry", "Cry Wolf", and "Hallelujah California"
The August 2017 DSD Playlist is here!
