DSD January 31, 2018: "Morphine" - Danrell & Alec King
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music!
Morphine - Danrell & Alec King
Considering that the first time I talked about the collaboration between Danrell and Alec King back in August, they ended up clocking in at #4 on my Top 50 Songs of 2017, it should come as little surprise that with the release of their EP Morphine last week, that we are going to revisit their dope as hell pop/hip hop/house sound.
Check out the title track, "Morphine" below:
The way "Morphine" starts just sets the tone so perfectly: this has a strange, near-tropical house atmosphere to start, which really lightens the whole track and gives it a little bit more bounce. By the time Alec King kicks in with his (as usual, great) vocals, I found that I had a big, ear-to-ear grin on my face, and I was singing the chorus along with the track before I had finished listening to it the first time--which is a great sign when it comes to tracks like this. It's catchy, it's super-positive, and it's one of those tracks that will work in a variety of playlists and situations.
I said it the first time I talked about Danrell & Alec King, and I will say it again: they have created "a song that I wish I had when I was still spinning sets." "Morphine" is versatile, and beautifully produced, making it a real-standout single in early 2018.
If you dig this track, you do need to pick up Morphine - EP because not only does it include this track, but "Bad Dreams", their great, dance-y breakout "Visions (ft. Leu Leu Land)" and two other tracks that all combine into a truly special pop release that I am sure I will have in high rotation for quite a while here at theguysfrom tower.
For the first time ever on theguysfrom.com, here is the December Apple Music Playlist, and the December '17 Spotify Playlist! I decided that, rather than making myself crazy with a hybrid list between the two months (and thanks to the fact that I did a feature-full month) I would put this one together, which just means that the January playlist will be a tad shorter than most thanks to the TGF Top 50 Songs of 2017 (with the in countdown order Apple Music TGF Top 50 Songs of 2017 as Well as the Spotify TGF Top 50 Songs of 2017 playlists here)
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!
