DSD March 14, 2018: "Betty" - Percival Elliott
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music!
Betty - Percival Elliott
English indie folk rock duo Percival Elliott make their return to the Daily Song Drop today (having first made an appearance back in December 2017) with the release of their official video for their latest single "Betty", which you can watch below:
"Betty" really showcases the breadth of sound Percival Elliott is capable of; their track "Forever" from late last year was much more of a sweet, folk love song, whereas "Betty" really punches up the rock in "folk rock": lively piano melodies and a kicking electric guitar combine to give the track a great, retro rock feel. There's a lot to like here for fans of classic rock (I get some definite Supertramp vibes from "Betty"), but Percival Elliott have also managed to fold in a modern indie rock structure to keep the song feeling fresh and new, all while telling an engaging story about the perils of fame, and the emptiness of "pretending that you are OK".
"Betty" is definitely one of those songs that, with every listen, you are going to hear new bits and pieces to appreciate (thought I think there's a guitar solo that's going to catch your attention every time).
If this is your first introduction to Percival Elliott, be sure to check out our previous feature on "Forever", and keep an eye out for their debut album which is expected to drop sometime very soon.
The February 2018 DSD Apple Music List and February 2018 DSD Spotify List are available! These ones where admittedly tricky as it is a short month (meaning there are fewer songs for me to build the set with), and we are also missing a couple from the lists: "Coward's Castle" by Monti and "highr" by buuzey. However, I have to say that I do enjoy the playlist this month, and I hope you will check it out (at the links above), and share it with your friends!
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!
