DSD December 29, 2017: "City Boy feat. Supa Good D Smoke" - Sha'Leah Nikole
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music
City Boy feat. Supa Good D Smoke - Sha'Leah Nikole
Wrapping up this....well, year (wow) on the Daily Song Drop we have a delightful indie R&B track from Los Angeles based Singer/Songwriter Sha'Leah Nikole's debut EP The Queen Issue which dropped earlier this year.
Check out "City Boy feat. Supa Good D Smoke" below:
"City Boy" felt like a great way to wrap up 2017: Sha'Leah Nikole has a gorgeous voice, especially for this fun neo-jazz/R&B style. I love the way that her vocals interact with the percussion/piano/horn layers in the track, as she really does bring the song together into something that will not only get you moving, but stick with you long after your first (second....fifth) listen. I really love how the track has a real energy behind it that Nikole never lets get ahold of the track (letting "City Boy" roll across you) until Supa Good D Smoke kicks his verse in, and then Nikole reins the track back in.
I feel like I am going to want to sit on a patio or balcony next summer, and just jam along to "City Boy" because it's going to slow the world down a bit, and make me feel good.
...and there is literally no better way to end 2017 on the DSD than with a track that can pick you up.
If this is your first introduction to Sha'Leah Nikole, be sure to check out the rest of The Queen Issue, with another favourite of mine being "I Need You".
First off, for the first time ever on theguysfrom.com, here is the December Apple Music Playlist, and the December '17 Spotify Playlist! I decided that, rather than making myself crazy with a hybrid list between the two months (and thanks to the fact that I did a feature-full month) I would put this one together, HOWEVER because I am pre-writing this ('tis the holidays) that means that there are a few tracks missing, because they're new, or what-have-you....so I will try to add those that I can in the new year, but regardless, enjoy downloading the playlists now OR check it out right here:
ICYMI (somehow) here are the November Apple Music Playlist October 2017 Apple Music Playlist, September 2017 Apple Music Playlist August 2017 DSD Playlist July 2017 DSD Playlist, June 2017 DSD Playlist, May 2017 DSD Playlist DSD Playlist - Apr 17, DSD Playlist - Mar 17 , and there's also one kicking around for DSD Playlist - Feb 17 too!
Not to mention the fact that we totally also have a June '17 Spotify List, a July '17 Spotify List, an August '17 Spotify List, the September 2017 Spotify Playlist, October '17 Spotify Playlist, and November Spotify Playlist too!
If you're looking for me to add these lists somewhere beyond Apple Music and Spotify (or you want some of the old lists on Spotify), you're going to have to convince me (hard) by chatting with me here, or on Twitter
If you're looking for more great music, are late to the party, or just want more theguysfrom.com in your day, here are the Apple Music playlists for:
Apple Music Playlist for the Top 20 Songs of 2016
There are other (earlier) playlists available for you if you check older "Tuesday Tunes" articles, or search on Apple Music itself.
Next week, it will be a little different: we will be doing out Top 50 Songs of 2017!
So, I will see you, starting Monday, with 10 songs a day, and a "Top 50" playlist, along with the Top 10 next Friday.
Happy New Year!
