DSD April 17, 2017: "Let You Go" - Brandy Butler & The Brokenhearted

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear.

Let You Go - Brandy Butler & The Brokenhearted

There's always something so interesting to me about the first song of an artists first album, and "Let You Go" by Brandy Butler & The Brokenhearted sets a fascinating tone for the rest of her first solo album The Inventory of Goodbye. Butler, originally from Philadelphia, but working and living in Switzerland, has been collaborating on tonnes of other works for some 20 years, but has just released her first solo album earlier this year, and....

...well first, have a listen to the beautifully spare "Let You Go" below:

First, and foremost, Butler has an amazing, and deeply emotional voice that is perfect for the soulful-pop she has produced in "Let You Go", because lyrically, she is a helluva story-teller, but it really is her voice makes the track come alive. I appreciate that the tone established by the band behind Butler is warm, but feels very spare--this feels like a song that I should be listening to sitting on the hood of my car in the Badlands (because I live in one of those weird places where I'm not too far from a place that has snow AND cacti).

I talk about a lot of music here in the 'Daily Song Drop', but it is rare that I come across one that has such a cinematic scale, and full-blooded emotion in it. I get a sense of tone, and place so quickly in this song that I don't need a video--I can see "Let You Go" already.

The Invitation to Goodbye is an album that, if you enjoy "Let You Go", you need. It's as simple as that.

Oh so close to a complete list for the DSD Playlist - Mar 17 , but that's alright...there is over 80 minutes of indie awesomeness available for you right now....not to mention...in case you somehow missed it, here is last months DSD Playlist - Feb 17
Plus, if you're interested, there is also an  Apple Music Playlist for the Top 20 Songs of 2016, where I put together my favourite tracks from last year.

Remember, if you want me to expand where I put these playlists beyond Apple Music, you just need to let me know on Twitter, and I'll see what I can do.

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
