DSD February 7, 2018: "The Boy" - Shannon and the Clams

Shaun Cordingley

Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music

The Boy - Shannon and the Clams

Brace yourselves long-time TGF readers/listeners: today's Daily Song Drop was referred to me by Dave. The Dave that writes the Throwback Tracks features, and listens to only Pearl Jam (and Pearl Jam adjacent bands) or stuff from before anyone was born...
We're starting to alter Dave everybody....and I'm so proud.

Especially because the track that he referred me to is "The Boy" by Oakland's Shannon and the Clams, and it is absolutely fantastic.

Check out the official video below:

Quite frankly, I cannot believe that I had not heard Shannon and the Clams before because they tick so many boxes of the sound I love (and long-time DSD readers are going to recognize this right away) and they have been making music together for almost a decade.
Shannon and the Clams are a band that take a bunch of retro elements, from early (as in 1950s) rock, to early punk, to du-wop to psychedelia and blend it all into their own unique sound. "The Boy", for example, has a real early-rock vibe to it, especially in the verses (with the slightest hint of surf), and then, when the chorus kicks in, you are going to get early-girl group vibes. It's such a brilliantly though-out, and constructed track that I just can't seem to stop listening to it.

Or watching the everything-I-wanted-it-to-be video that you've watched...

The best news as well, if you enjoyed "The Boy" is that we are literally only 9 days from the release of the next Shannon and the Clams album, called Onion ("The Boy" being the lead single, and the slower, trippier "Did You Love Me" as the second), so be sure to check that out ASAP.

As promised, here are the January 2018 Apple Music Playlist, and the January 2018 Spotify Playlist for the Daily Song Drop. It seems like we are starting off the month with the traditional "one song is missing" (that being "Board It Up" by Nekokat), but all in all it's a pretty fun list to start the year off!
Plus it was not the usual soul-murdering December/January blended list that always drove me nuts every year with its' "two months" of songs to try and fit together.
Who does that?

If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!

See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!

The Guys From do not hold the rights to any "Daily Song Drop" songs, it is more our hope to expose our readers to new and different music that we are enjoying, or re-expose them to artists they may have forgotten about.

Above the description of the song will be the song name, followed by the artists' name linked to their website, so you can fall down the rabbit hole, finding and supporting what you dig.
