Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music
We Know You In Real Life - Packy
Today on the Daily Song Drop we have a great indie hip hop single from Los Angeles-based artist Packy (part of The Specktators Collective) called "We Know You In Real Life".
Check out the track below (heads up: lyrics are a bit NSFW):
If this isn't the hip hop anthem for social media/internet culture in early 2018, I don't know what is. Lyrically I really dig what Packy is doing here, in a track which is basically calling out those fake people we all know (all too damn well in my opinion) who are all in on social media and completely nothing in person. The best part is that the flow is spot on (shifting tempo effortlessly while never feeling jarred or out of place) and it's all supported by a retro-island inspired beat that helps turn "We Know You In Real Life" into a laid-back, house party anthem.
If this is your first introduction to Packy, be sure to keep an eye out (especially around SoundCloud) as he has been consistently releasing solid singles for quite a while, including the rollin' drawl heavy "Never Know".
As promised, here are the January 2018 Apple Music Playlist, and the January 2018 Spotify Playlist for the Daily Song Drop. It seems like we are starting off the month with the traditional "one song is missing" (that being "Board It Up" by Nekokat), but all in all it's a pretty fun list to start the year off!
Plus it was not the usual soul-murdering December/January blended list that always drove me nuts every year with its' "two months" of songs to try and fit together.
Who does that?
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!
