DSD March 21, 2018: "One Night In Tokyo" - The New Division
Shaun Cordingley
Welcome to the "Daily Song Drop": theguysfrom.com's song of the day feature where our resident indie music writer and former DJ Shaun Cordingley features a song every weekday that he feels you need to hear. If you enjoy the track, please share it, so we can keep on talking about great new music!
One Night In Tokyo - The New Division
Today on the Daily Song Drop we have a new single from Los Angeles based electronic Musician/Producer John Glenn Kunkel AKA The New Division called "One Night In Tokyo" off of his new EP Fader.
Check the track out below:
Featuring a lush, cinematic soundscape, "One Night In Tokyo" feels brand new, but with such heavy, nostalgically 1980s elements that it just lingers at the edge of you remembering having heard it at that great party, or in your favourite 1980s cyberpunk movie the whole play time. The eerily atmospheric production really helps to emphasize the story told here (yes, it's a great electronic track with an actual story) about a trans-Pacific love affair, as Kunkel's vocals waft across that 80s cyberpunk vibe to give "One Night In Tokyo" something that you are just not hearing anywhere else in the indie electronic/new wave scene. At times, both forlorn, and exciting, "One Night In Tokyo" is a song that has me incredibly excited for the rest of his soon to release EP Fader.
If you are looking for more of The New Division to enjoy, and just cannot wait for Fader to release, then luckily you have three studio albums and four other EPs to check out of his, with the EP Night Escape, or the melancholy dance anthem "Copycat" being a couple personal favourites!
The February 2018 DSD Apple Music List and February 2018 DSD Spotify List are available! These ones where admittedly tricky as it is a short month (meaning there are fewer songs for me to build the set with), and we are also missing a couple from the lists: "Coward's Castle" by Monti and "highr" by buuzey. However, I have to say that I do enjoy the playlist this month, and I hope you will check it out (at the links above), and share it with your friends!
If you're looking for any of our past playlists, be sure to check out a Friday DSD feature, or search for theguysfrom on either Apple Music or Spotify!
See you tomorrow for our next Daily Song Drop!
